ELIGIBILITY
Entrant must be enrolled in a college degree program at the Time of entry.
High school students entering college in the fall of 2008
are also eligible.
Contest is open to students worldwide.
REQUIREMENTS
Essays may be written either in English or in French. Only one essay will be accepted per applicant.
Only the finalists will be contacted by e-mail or by phone.
Essay must be no fewer than 800 and no more than 1,600 words in length, and must be double-spaced.
Essay must be solely the work of the entrant.
Decisions of the judges are final.
Board of Directors and their immediate family members are not eligible for this contest.
All entries become the property of Fondation Memoire and will not be returned
The essay text must not contain any form of the author's identity.
Your e-mail must contain only your personal information and the attached file must contain only your essay. The e-mail
and the attached file will be numbered and separated.
Applications must be sent by e-mail as indicated in the instructions. Those received by any other means (e. g. links to
web pages, by post or by fax) will be disqualified.
JUDGING:
Judges are individually selected by Fondation Memoire based
on their work and their demonstrated knowledge and
understanding of Haitian history.
Essays will be judged on both style and content, also on
knowledge, originality and presentation. Judges will look
for writing that is clear, articulate and logically
organized. Elements that judges will be looking for include
RESEARCH WORK
The quality of your research will demonstrate your effort
and your depth of understanding of the issue you are
addressing. Things to remember:
Have you adequately researched both facts and points of
view regarding the topic?
Have you supported your assertions with good examples and
verifiable facts?
Does your essay show that you know the topic well enough to make informed judgments?
Are the ideas and information obtained from other sources cited properly?
QUALITY OF THE ANALYSIS
The goal of this contest is to encourage students to know
more about Haiti and develop their own ideas about the
country. This approach will likely show your originality,
help you come with your own ideas.
Have you carefully and in your own way thoughtfully
reviewed and analyzed the information, the analysis
presented?
Have you approached the issue from your own an original perspective
Have you used critical thinking skills to support your positions and conclusions?
Have you been coherent and convincing in your presentation?
STYLE AND MECHANICS The judges will also look at the Style
and Mechanic. Take the time to make sure that your writing
is well organized, (introduction, body, conclusion and list
of references) free of errors in syntax grammar, spelling
and punctuation and that your writing is focused and well
reasoned and that the quotations and sources are properly
cited.
Main reasons for Disqualification are plagiarism and not
following the rules regarding length, format, and/or date
of submission. Plagiarism, using another's words as if they are your own, is reason for automatic exclusion.
DEADLINE
Essay must be postmarked no later than September 15, 2008.
